The Author

Barbara Kimenye was the first black woman journalist in East Africa. She trained with the Nation group of newspapers, first in Uganda, and later in Kenya, where for many years she was the women’s features editor of the Daily Nation. She draws mainly on her Ugandan background for her writing, but now lives in Kenya. She is the acclaimed author of the famous Moses Series. The Runaway Bride is her second novel in the Pacesetters Series. The first one was The Mating Game.

What The Future Holds By Sarah Mkhonza

What the Future Holds follows the life of Lobenguni “Kiki” Mkhatshwa, a young Swazi woman of Nguni descent who, at the beginning of the novel, has brought her baby into town to confront the child’s father, Menzi Dlamini (Dlamini is a common Swazi clan name), at his place of work, in order to ensure that he pays child support.

We then flashback to 1961, before Kiki was born, and meet her mother, LaMsibi, and father, Gezani, who struggle to make a life for themselves as farmers in a small village in the Maphakane valley. Gezani is determined to ensure that his child has a better life than he has so he decides to have her educated. Gezani is a traditional Nguni who does not approve of Christianity and the foreign missionaries who bring it.

However, he does appreciate the need for Swazi children to be able to read and write, and only missionary schools provide this education. Despite having convinced his father to disown her twenty years earlier when she converted to Christianity, Gezani seeks out his sister, Saraphina, a teacher at a missionary school, and asks that she takes in Kiki and sends her to school. Gezani then decides to leave his homestead and go back to working in the mines of Johannesburg in order to pay for Kiki’s education.

Gezani and his wife, LaMsibi, rejoiceat the birth of their daughter, kiki, Late in their marriage. Determined to educate her, they look forward to a bright future for her. But disaster strikes and the once-properous Gezani is forced to leave his homeland in Swaziland to seek work at the minesin Johannesburg. Kiki is sent away to be educated and life proves hard for her, living with an embittered aunt. The news of her parents, untimely deaths is but one incident in a chain of events which threatens to overcomeher, but Kiki is made of stuff…

The Author.

Sarah Mkhonza was born in 1957 at Sipholaneni. She attended Phonjewane Primary School and Later went on to Manzini Nazarene High School for ‘O’ Level and the University of Swaziland where she obtained a BA and CDE. After the junior degree she worked as a teacher at Evelyn Baring High School for Five years. In 1984 she got a scholarship to do a Masters Teaching English asd a Foreign Language in Southern Illinois, University of Carbondale . After getting her MA in 1985 she joined the University of Swaziland as a Lecturer in the English Department. It is while working at the University that she developed an interest in writing. She has written poems and short Stories and has published three short stories in her mother tongue, SiSwali. What the Future Holds is her second novel in the Pacesetters Series. The first, Pains of a Maid was the winner of the Macmillian Boleswa/Pace magazine Pacesetter competition of 1988.

His secondary education was at Tema Secondary School where he obtained his ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels. From 1974 to 1977, he studied at the Univesity of Ghana, Lagon, obtaining a BA(Hons) in English. After graduation, he took up teaching. He has taught in high schools and higher institutions in Ghana, Nigeria and Swaziland. His hobbies are reading, traveling and art appreciation. Sunset at Noon was the second prizr-winner of the Macmillian Boleswa/Pace magazine Pacesetter competition of 1988.
