Product details

Governance has emerged as a central concept and key word in China's governmental and loc,al policy and practice at different levels. This edited collection combines empirical and normative researches as well as theoretical exploration and case studies on the governance theories and practices in China.

"The focus of this work is on the problem of 'governance, the effective exercise of authority over society and society's acknowledgement of that authority, an issue of both practical and intellectual current relevance. The book is certainly timely now."
—Peter R. Moody, professor of Political Science, University of Notre Dame
"To what extent can power be legitimized by governance that is good, though not democratic in procedural terms? This volume gives answers from a mostly Chinese perspective and will certainly trigger much debate among scholars interested in China's evolving state-society relationship."
-Gunter Schubert, chair of Greater China Studies, University of Tubingen
"Governance" has recently become a key concept among Chinese policymakers and academics.
It is increasingly reflected in reform practices at all levels of government in response to emerging social, political, economic, and environmental issues, as well as to challenges posed by China's market-oriented reforms and rapid modernization. This edited collection on China's ongoing search for good governance provides innovative analyses about the dynamics and factors shaping contemporary governance practices. Included are theoretical reflections on Chinese governance practices, China's growing role in global governance, and their long-term domestic and global implications.
