Aso-oke is a type of clothing material that has its roots in the Yoruba culture found in South West Nigeria. It has been for decades, is peculiar to events and occasions and in today’s world, has evolved in many ways. They are now more fashionable and more widely worn than before. What used to exactly belong to only Yorubas is now widely worn by non-yorubas across the country and across the globe. Aso-oke varies with design and with quality. Aso-oke clothing is now a luxury for major events in Nigeria and beyond. Although, years ago, it used to be made by hand by local craftsmen, today, technology has made it possible to make the clothing with machines. The clothing is now more beautiful and more fashionable and new types keep getting produced everyday. You can mould this clothing into different forms like ‘Agbada’, tops, trousers, ‘gele’, ‘ipele’ ‘buba’, ‘iro’. Aso oke designs also vary with level of complexity from simple to complex and they can also be worn to different occasions from wedding ceremonies to birthdays, festivals, funerals and many more.
