This is a Clutch Servo (also commonly referred to as a pneumatic clutch actuator or clutch booster). It is a vital component in the manual and automated manual transmission systems of Volvo heavy-duty trucks.
The clutch servo acts as a power-assist device. When the driver presses the clutch pedal, the hydraulic fluid pressure activates the servo. The servo then uses the vehicle’s compressed air system to multiply that force, allowing the heavy-duty clutch diaphragm springs to be disengaged with minimal physical effort from the operator.
It converts pneumatic (air) energy into mechanical force. This is essential in heavy-duty vehicles where the force required to release the clutch would otherwise be too high for a driver to manage comfortably over a long shift.
