SPORT Referee Football Cards Red/Yellow

Red and Yellow Cards in Soccer.

In soccer, yellow and red cards are disciplinary tools used by the referee to manage player behavior and maintain control of the game. They are physical rectangular cards, typically made of plastic, and are highly visible due to their bright colors.

???? Yellow Card

Appearance:

Bright yellow, rectangular.

About the size of a playing card, easy for visibility.

Meaning:

A caution or warning to a player for misconduct.

Common offenses include:

Unsporting behavior (e.g., reckless tackles)

Dissent by word or action

Delaying the restart of play

Failing to respect the required distance (e.g., during free kicks)

Persistent infringement of the rules

Entering/leaving the field without permission

Consequences:

The player continues to play but is now “on notice.”

Two yellow cards in the same match result in a red card (player is sent off).

???? Red Card

Appearance:

Bright red, rectangular.

Used immediately for serious offenses.

Meaning:

A sending off – the player must leave the field immediately.

Common reasons include:

Serious foul play

Violent conduct

Spitting at someone

Denying a goal-scoring opportunity with a handball or foul

Using offensive, insulting, or abusive language or gestures

Receiving a second yellow card

Consequences:

Player is ejected from the game and cannot be replaced.

The team plays with one fewer player (down to 10).

The player usually receives a suspension for future games.

Referee Use:

Cards are kept in the referee's shirt pocket.

The referee holds the card up high above their head when issuing it, so it's clearly seen by players, coaches, fans, and officials.
