From Old Wisdom to Modern Science
Not long ago, dietary fibre—often called “roughage”—was thought to have little value for overall health. Aside from grandmothers reminding us to “eat your roughage to stay well,” its importance went largely unnoticed. That changed when researchers in Africa observed that certain communities, living on unrefined, high-fibre foods, were free from many of the diseases common in Western societies. Their findings suggested that the lack of fibre in modern diets may play a major role in common health concerns.
Fibre Intake Falls Short
Health experts recommend that adults consume 25–35 grams of fibre daily, yet the average diet provides only 10–20 grams—barely half the required amount. This shortfall highlights the need to restore fibre to everyday meals.
The Fibre Gap
Bridging the 10–20 gram deficit can be difficult in today’s world of refined and processed foods. To complicate matters, fruits, vegetables, and grains differ greatly in their fibre types and content. For example, cabbage, peas, and other young plants supply cellulose but very little lignin, while bran is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, yet lacks pectin and gums.
Each dose of 4 tablets contributes 2 g of fibre from a variety of food sources.
Take up to 4 tablets with a glassful of water half an hour before a meal.
