Bentonite is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminum silicate; a highly absorbent clay which is composed of minerals including iron, silica and aluminum, it is usually formed from volcanic ash which has been aged by time 

Bentonite clay is a product composed of ash taken from volcanoes. The clay is dried in the sun, filtered and then sold commercially in several forms, including as a supplement, facial clay masks, ointments/pastes and hair treatments. When mixed with water it forms a thick paste.

It contains a range of nutrients. Bentonite clay is known to have an abundance of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper, iron and potassium.
Uses:  Bentonite clay is used as a thickener, emulsion stabilizer and suspending agent for opaque products. It hydrates quickly and easily in water and gives structure to the water phase of your creams or liquid products and is particularly well suited to pigmented make-up such as BB creams, Liquid Foundation or tinted moisturizers.
Use Levels: 0.5-3%
Formulating Tips:  Add to the water phase while stirring.  Bentonite is heat stable so you can heat the water to decrease hydration time.  Continue mixing until a smooth thickened water phase is formed with no lumps.  The clay should be hydrated in pure water with no additives. 
Bentonite clay's ability to draw out pore-clogging dirt and debris and may also help congested skin appear cleansed and refreshed. As such, you'll find bentonite clay in skincare formulas specifically aimed at reducing the appearance of pores and blackheads.
