Lugol’s Iodine (also called Lugol’s Solution, aqueous iodine, “strong iodine solution”) is a mixture of elemental iodine (I₂) and potassium iodide (KI) dissolved in water.
The potassium iodide helps to increase the solubility of iodine in water (iodine by itself is not very water‑soluble). Together they form triiodide ion equilibrium, allowing iodine to be delivered in solution.
