Lion's mane mushrooms are also known as hou tou gu in Traditional Chinese Medicine. When it comes to mushrooms, the fruit body has several benefits, but there are also several benefits to mycelium, and the combination is highly complementary. This is why our organic mushrooms are a full-spectrum product, containing the benefits of fruit body and mycelium. A great example of this is seen with Lion’s Mane. Two major compounds found in Lion’s Mane are Hericenones and Erinacines – Hericenones are found primarily in the fruit body, and Erinacines are found primarily in the mycelium.

Lion’s mane is a nootropic fungus that emerges from rotting hardwoods as a single clump of spine-like projections that branch out from a single core and hang like tendrils. The flesh is spongy, and the elongated “teeth” are semi-hollow and somewhat fragile. The mushroom has the color inside and out and the texture of cauliflower.

Lion’s mane occurs naturally on fallen hardwood logs. It may also be cultivated on logs indoors or outdoors without soil. The mushroom is ready for harvesting in 1-2 years and will continue to produce a fruiting body for up to 6 years.

Lion’s mane mushroom has long been used in Asian countries for food and medicine. The fruit may be eaten raw or cooked as a vegetable. It is often found in rice and pasta dishes, and soups, stews and gravies. Powdered lion’s mane mushroom may be infused in hot water as tea or added to coffee, green smoothies and other beverages.

Researchers are studying the neurotrophic profile of lion’s mane, with particular interest in two groups of compounds known as hericenones and erinacines. These chemicals demonstrate potential neuroprotective effects from cognitive decline associated with aging, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. These agents also appear to stimulate nerve growth factor synthesis in the brain, and exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and immunostimulant effects.
