Product details

An important new book published in advance of the Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference argues that current proposals (including those to be discussed in Copenhagen),do not go far enough. The radical and sometimes unexpected views expressed by Peter McManners may surprise or even shock readers. Previous books have attacked our current society and predicted environmental disaster, but none have managed to suggest any truly convincing strategies to improve matters. Victim of Success is the first book to suggest a range of creative strategies that are practical, convincing, and really could make a difference. Peter McManners also has the courage to spell out the reality of just how harsh and far-reaching changes must be - but he goes on to inspire by showing how this brave new world could be a surprisingly pleasant place, much better (he claims) than the world we live in now. The first part of the book predicts a period of economic boom after the financial crisis of 2009, followed by catastrophic collapse as three issues climate change, population growth, and the depletion of oil reserves all come to a head at the same time. The second part spells out the changes that must be made, including innovative strategies and resolute action to: control the world's population; ban fossilfuel; curb the (current) aviation industry; eliminate the throwaway society, and harness the power of community. The third part of Victim of Success explains the author's vision of the sustainable world he believes we can achieve, but his vision is realistic and practical. His view is that a sustainable world will not be perfect, but if we embrace change it could be better than the world we have now. And he is clear that it is our generation that must make that choice.
