Surveying forms an important part of higher diploma and undergraduate courses in civil engineering and building, and site surveying and setting out provide the first opportunities for young site engineers to put into practice knowledge acquired as students. It is therefore important that students appreciate the relevance of surveying theory and techniques to construction operations.
The aims of the first edition were to produce a textbook comprehensive yet concise and to cover setting out in some detail; these have been retained. Methods becoming outmoded are covered only briefly to allow increased emphasis to be placed on the use of EDM and data loggers.
The field work for control networks is covered as in the theory of least squares, utilized in computer programs for the adjustment and analysis of control measurements. The Global Positioning System, likely to find widespread application in construction, is described in some detail.
Further worked examples and exercises have been added, the intention being to explain fully the underlying theory, to promote an appreciation of site problems and to provide detailed guidance for carrying out field work.
The book is designed as a main text for undergraduate and
BTEC courses in construction subjects. It will also serve as a reference work on sites, where its theory can be complemented by essential practical experience.
