Nigerian Maritime Laws VOL 1&2

The essence of this work produced in two volumes is to present to the general public handy reference materials in respect of maritime laws which before now are contained in many books. Volume 1 contains selected sections on Merchant Shipping Act, selected subsidiary legislations (Merchant Shipping Act), the whole of National Shipping Policy Act, and Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act, 2003 which was signed into law on 7th May, 2003.
Volume II contains other relevant laws to maritime. For some of the laws
- Customs and Excise Management Act, Navy Act, Immigration Act etc. - only the sections considered relevant to maritime issues are included.
In deciding which laws (section/chapter) to select, we were guided by the relevance of such laws to ship, sea, cargo, personnel and other maritime infrastructure.
We have provided summary and table of contents for each of the laws. :
By so doing the user is, at a glance, afforded the opportunity of a quick * reference to the law. Where it would not make much difference to the understanding of the particular law, we did not include schedules.
All this is aimed at making the book user friendly to those who are not lawyers. For the benefit of further legislation, we have annexed list of IMO Conventions which are in force in Nigeria and IMO Conventions which have been accepted in Nigeria, as at date of the publication.
While every effort has been made to include all laws having relevance to the maritime, we believe this book cannot be more comprehensive than the laws of the federation of Nigeria. Further reference should therefore be made to them.
