Product details

Microbial Physiology retains the logical, easy-to-follow organization of the previous editions. An introduction to cell structure and synthesis of cell components is provided, followed by detailed discussions of genetics, metabolism, growth, and regulation. for anyone wishing to understand the mechanisms underlying cell survival and growth. This comprehensive reference approaches the subject from a modern molecular genetic perspective, incorporating new insights gained from various genome projects. The major objective of this book is to identify and focus attention on those methods and concepts that contribute to an understanding of organismal or genetic persistence. In addition, information about microbial physiology, genetics and ecology contributing to persistence of microorganisms or the measurement of persistence will be discussed.
Consequently, there is a great need for more baseline information concerning the ecology of microbes in the natural environment. In determining the underlying risks associated with the release of genetically engineered microorganisms, both the target of risk and the critical exposure level must be identified.
Contents: 1. Introduction to Microbial Physiology, 2. Macromolecular Synthesis and Processing, 3. Bacterial Genetics, 4. Microbial Physiology in the Genomic Era,
5. Bacteriophage Genetics, 6. Cell Structure and Function.
Glen Pierce is a professor in the department of biology and the co-author of Practical Methods in Molecular Biology. He has been the recipient of a Helen Hay Whitney PostDoctoral and an NIH Career Development Award. His current research utilizes genetics, physiology, and recombinant DNA technology to study the mechanism of regulation of the E. coli. Glen Pierce served as Director of the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health, a massive project to decipher the entire genetic code of the human species. He has received many awards and medals for his work. He has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Lynn Scott is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences and a member of both the Neuroscience and Genetics programs. Prior to this appointment, she was on the faculty of the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department, the Department of Neuroscience, and the Developmental Biology program. In addition to the prior edition of Genetics and Biotechnology, she has written Weedy and Invasive Plant Genomics, Plant Transformation Technologies, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Cytology, Genetics and Molecular Biology and Research Ethics for Scientists: A Companion for Students. SHe has also served on many National Institute of Health advisory committees.
