Product details

Military intelligence is a military discipline that uses information collection and analysis approaches to provide guidance and direction to assist commanders in their decisions. This aim is achieved by providing an assessment of data from a range of sources, directed towards the commanders' mission requirements or responding to questions as part of operational or campaign planning. To provide an analysis, the commander's information requirements are first identified, which are then incorporated into intelligence collection, analysis, and dissemination. Intelligence, in military science, information concerning an enemy or an area. The term is also used for an agency that gathers such information. Information relating to that particular local area or engagement, for example who exactly is guarding a particular bridge or strongpoint, is there a tank or other armoured assets in the area, or the strength of a particular unit in the area. Defence Intelligence (DI) is a member of the United Kingdom Intelligence Community, but differs from the agencies (SIS, GCHQ and the Security Service) in that it is not a stand-alone organisation, but is an integral part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD). The organisation employs a mixture of civilian and military staff and is funded within the Defence budget. Like the rest of the MOD, Defence Intelligence was subject to the 2008 'Streamlining' initiative in which 20-25 percent of Central London staff were cut and it has had to continue to find additional savings since. The organisation was formerly known as the Defence Intelligence Staff or DIS, but changed its name in 2009. This is not a study of intelligence work as such, but of how intelligence can improve the chances of success on the battlefield by facilitating the more effective and economical use of troops.
