I feel highly pleased and satisfied that I am still on the scene to write Preface to the 8th Edition of Engineering and General Geology, first published in 1963 when I happened to be a mere lecturer in Geology at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana. A distance of 45 years! The very science of Geology and entire nature of Civil Engineering have undergone such drastic changes, mostly evolutionary, that a mere narration of them may need volumes of books. One thing seems having remained constant: confidence of students throughout the country and abroad about the book. It has remained unshaken, year after year. I repeat, that is highly satisfying for me.
While going through the book, page by page, word by word, I was struck by a strange fact.
Though I have grown old, the book retains its youth and freshness. And above all, its relevance. This, of course, has been possible because each new edition has been meticulously updated.
Present Edition has additional information on Climates, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Tsunamis and also on water crisis.
I owe many thanks to Mr. Sanjeev Kataria son of my late friend Dewan Sushil Kumar Kataria, who is always giving me great respect and personal care to see the Engineering Geology in the best shape. My sincere gratitude is due to my son Raja Gurmaninder Singh (M.C.A., P.G.D.B.M) who has taken the job of editing this edition of the book on himself and completed. it well in time despite heavy compulsions of personal job. My special thanks are due to Dr. G.M. Bhat, Professor and Head, Post-Graduate Department of Geology and Dr. S.K. Bukhari of Deptt. of Civil Engg. NIT Srinagar, Kashmir for sparing some very nice photographs for publication in the book.
I convey my sincere regards to all of my past students who have sent many valuable suggestions through the feedback forms appended at the end of the books
