The book "Econometrics" was born out of the need to close the gap between content and delivery of a typical semester course on Introductory Econometrics for undergraduates. Generally, the course on Econometrics is perceived as being difficult by students which lead to an unwarranted phobia for the course. The reason for this phobia might be connected to the content of the materials used in teaching this course which is heavily mathematized with a lot of proofs. As a result, the students with weak quantitative aptitude are discouraged. More so, the approaches adopted by most lecturers of Econometrics create an impression that the course is advanced and difficult to handle at the undergraduate level.
Consequently, most student do not benefit from this course.
This book was written with the intention to encourage students to develop interest in econometrics by keeping the content as simple and non-mathematical as possible without compromising on detail and necessary rigor.
The emphasis therefore is on the application of Econometrics to economic analysis which does not require the complex proof of the formulas utilized in estimating economic relationships. The main focus of this book is linear Econometric models which lays a good foundation for other nonlinear models which are natural extension of the linear models. At the end, this book will remain a reference material for any student wishing to study econometrics beyond a typical semester course.
Finally, the examples in this book were worked out step by step so that students can re-work such examples on their own and reconfirm examples given in the classroom. Similarly, the authors deployed current Econometric software packages - EViews and STATA-examples to demonstrate how some of the hitherto complex computation can be performed and interpreted. It is hoped that this book will help the students in understanding the course on Econometrics.
