In codge oding e euty deraid nation ecuay Despite the dancient in ovielines of code without leaving an error- a potentially exploitable bug. An advanced fighter jet running millions of lines of code will therefore have that many potentially exploitable bugs that can be made t malfunction mid-air. The hacking of the systems of a defence manufacturer like Lockheed Martin by stat actors shows that the above scenario is not unrealistic. Lower down the chain, our transportation systems power grids, water supply systems, hospitals, supply chains, banks and other critical infrastructure ar increasingly controlled by interfaces that can be compromised and infiltrated. The sabotage of Ukraine's industrial control systems by malicious code such as BlackEnergy is proof of a threat that is here to stay. The arrival of the Stuxnet- Natanz worm at Iran's nuclear centrifuges started an arms race for zero day vulnerabilities that has only gained popularity over time. Middle level powers realised that industrialised super and great powers exposed a vast attack surface in cyber space that could be targeted with a far lower investment in cyber wea, pons than that required for conventional wea, pons and standing armies.A malicious wea,pon like the Eternal Blue worm and a few other crown jewels of the western powers, once acquired in the grey market, could be easily turned like a Frankenstein on their makers as the world increasingly deployed uniform operating systems, protocols, standards and applications. While the rage was for locating bugs that had not yet been discovered by vendors (zero-day bugs) there were many beneficial and idealistic bug hunters who wanted to discover these vulnerabilities so that the vendors could patch them in time. Bug Traq as a forum was born when an enterprising middle man started a bulletin on which ethical hackers could post their exploits in return for modest rewards. This was not strictly a philanthropy as the forum had to be subscribed to. But the basic idea graduated to an open source platform in the shape of Kali Linux at present on which idealistic ethical hackers post their discovered bugs for free. The present book and its companion, "Cyber Crime and Its Prevention In Easy Steps" is totally based on Kali Linux for demonstrating vulnerabilities on Windows and Linux platforms, Android smartphones, websites, browsers and databases. The hacking and forensic tools demonstrated in the book are open-source, though some of them are no longer available on Kali Linux. The purpose is to teach and educate our talented youth and motivate them to become cyber warriors of their dear motherland. Learning and understanding the techniques in this book will hopefully be a beginning step in their long walk to mastering the intricacies of cyber war in which our dear motherland must hold her own.
