THERE is an increasing awareness of the need to operate and control civil engineering contracts more efficiently, as promoters of such projects become more knowledgeable and demanding.
Weaknesses in civil engineering contract administration generally stem from poor communication and the absence of foolproof procedures. This book aims to show how these deficiencies can be overcome at all stages of the project, from inception to completion.
Intended for practising civil engineers and contractors as well as students of civil engineering, the text has been fully updated and extended to take cognisance of the Sixth Edition of the ICE Conditions, CESMM3, and revised British Standards. Other topics include the implications of European Community harmonisation on the construction industry and the operation of quality assurance in civil engineering.
The need for adequate site investigations and engineers' preliminary reports is clearly identified. Tendering arrangements and the preparation of civil engineering estimates are described and illustrated.
Due attention is paid to site organisation and supervision, supported by practical examples. The gains in efficiency and cost control that result from maintaining a well-organised and managed site are also effectively illustrated.
For more than twenty-five years, Ivor H. Seeley has been known for his valuable technical books covering topics in surveying, building and civil engineering. He was formerly Professor, Head of Department of Surveying and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies at The Nottingham Trent University, and is now an Emeritus Professor of the University. He is also a Visiting Professor at Anglia Polytechnic University and a UNESCO consultant. Professor Seeley has been an external examiner and adviser to many universities and other higher educational establishments in the UK and overseas, and examiner to three chartered professional bodies.
He has also served as Visiting Professor to the National University of Singapore and Visiting Fellow to the University of Greenwich. He has served as a local government chief technical officer and worked for two firms of consulting civil engineers, on new and expanding towns, and at the headquarters of the former Central Electricity Generating Board on power station contracts. Also well known for his professional activities, he has been a member of the RICS General Council continuously since 1970, and of the RICS Quantity Surveyors Divisional Council since 1988.
