Besides, it also deals with structure and properties of solids, and statistical mechanics.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. S.N. Ghoshal obtained his M.Sc. degree from Calcutta University and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He has carried out research under Prof. M.N. Saha, FRS and Prof. Emilio Segre, N.L. His fields of specialization include experimental nuclear physics and experimental mass spectroscopy.

Dr. Ghoshal taught at the University of Lucknow, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Presidency College, Kolkata and Calcutta University. He was the Principal of Presidency College and Director of Secondary Education, Government of West Bengal and an NRC Fellow at McMaster University, Hamilton Ontario, Canada. He has visited many important laboratories in different parts of the world and has attended various international conferences.

Dr. Ghoshal was a member of the National Committee on the Governance of Universities appointed by the University Grants Commission. He has also served on various committees of academic matter appointed by the State and the Central Governments. Dr. Ghoshal is a member of the Indian Physical Society of which he was Secretary and Vice President.

His publications include a chapter on High Resolution Mass Spectroscopes in the book Mass Spectrometry edited by C.A. McDowell, a Bengali book on Atomic and Nuclear Physics (two volumes) for Honours students and a book entitled Atomic and Nuclear Physics (two volumes) for undergraduate and postgraduate students besides numerous research papers.

The subject of Atomic Physics has grown tremendously in its scope during the last quarter of century. The present work was undertaken with a view to fill up this gap. My association with the teaching in the B.Sc. Honous classes at Presidency College, Calcutta for many years has been specially helpful to me in undertaking the work.
