Automotive Rust Proofing Primers

Automotive rust-proofing primers (also known as rust converters) chemically transform existing iron oxide (rust) into a stable, black protective layer. This process both neutralizes corrosion and creates a paintable surface that helps prevent future rust formation. They are especially useful for hard-to-reach areas where complete mechanical rust removal is difficult.

How They Work

Rust converter primers stabilize metal surfaces through a two-part process involving both chemical and physical protection.

1. Chemical Conversion

The active ingredients—typically tannic acid or phosphoric acid—react with red iron oxide (rust) and convert it into a stable, inert compound such as:

Iron tannate (from tannic acid), or

Iron phosphate (from phosphoric acid)

This reaction neutralizes active corrosion and turns the surface black, indicating successful conversion.

2. Protective Barrier Formation

An organic polymer, latex, or epoxy resin in the formula then forms a durable, non-porous film over the converted surface. This barrier:

Application Tips for Best Results

Surface Preparation

Remove loose rust, dirt, grease, and flaking paint using a wire brush or sandpaper

Do not remove all rust—tight, bonded rust is required for the chemical reaction

Application

Heavily corroded areas may require a second coat after the first has dried

Drying and Curing

Touch-dry: typically 20–40 minutes

Full cure: 24–48 hours before topcoating

Topcoating

Most rust converters are not UV-stable on their own. For maximum durability:
