Bentonite Clay
Other Names: Montmorillonite Clay
Description: Bentonite is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminium silicate; a highly absorbent clay which is composed of minerals including iron, silica and aluminium, it is usually formed from volcanic ash which has been aged by time and can from dark grey to greenish-grey.
Uses: Bentonite clay is used as a thickener, emulsion stabiliser and suspending agent for opaque products. It hydrates quickly and easily in water and gives structure to the water phase of your creams or liquid products and is particularly well suited to pigmented makeup such as BB creams, Liquid Foundation or tinted moisturisers.
Use Levels: 0.5-3%
Formulating Tips: Add to the water phase while stirring. Bentonite is heat stable so you can heat the water to decrease hydration time. Continue mixing until a smooth thickened water phase is formed with no lumps. The clay should be hydrated in pure water with no additives.
Bentonite is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays and can be used in a variety of ways.
Face Mask: Externally, Bentonite can be used as a mud mask to draw out impurities and toxins from the skin. It is useful in preventing acne, breakouts, skin irritations and other skin conditions.
For Hair: Make a paste of Bentonite Clay and either Aloe Vera Juice, Cider Vinegar or just plain water and apply to hair to remove build up caused by the application of different hair products.
It also takes some time for Bentonite clay to mix with water - please be patient. Bentonite is a swelling clay, when it becomes mixed with water it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge and so, a little amount goes a long way. Healing clays like Bentonite should never be mixed with or in any metal objects as this will reduce effectiveness of the clays.
Bentonite clay can be mixed with water, rose water, cider vinegar etc depending on what you intend to use it for.
Our Bentonite Clay is sold for external use only.
