The OraQuick HlV Self-Test is a private, in-home oral fluid test that detects HlV-1 and HlV-2 antibodies with over 99% accuracy. It is not a saliva test, but rather uses an oral swab to collect fluids from the gum line. Results are available in 20 minutes, with the test being effective for exposures that occurred more than three months ago. 

 

Key Information & Usage Instructions

  • Preparation: Do not eat, drink, or use mouth care products (toothpaste/mouthwash) for 30 minutes before testing.
  • Procedure: Swab the upper gum once and lower gum once using the testing device, then place the device into the provided tube of developer solution.
  • Time: Wait 20 to 40 minutes to read results. A single line at the "C" mark is negative; two lines (even if faint) at "C" and "T" indicate a preliminary positive result.
  • Limitations: A positive result requires a follow-up test by a healthcare professional. If you are on HlV antiretroviral treatment (ARVs), PrEP, or PEP, you may get a false negative result.

If the test is positive, seek a confirmatory test at a healthcare facility. If the test is negative but exposure was within the last 3 months, retest later. The test kit is safe for adults aged 14 and older.
