Product details
Liqueurs are spirit-based drinks to which flavors are added, or extracted from vegetal material by maceration or infusion, and are often enhanced by sweetening. Sometimes, generic terms such as aquavits, schnapps, eau de vies, or vodkas are used in different countries for both spirits and liqueurs
A liqueur is an alcoholic drink composed of spirits and additional flavorings such as sugar, fruits, herbs, and spices. Often served with or after dessert, they are typically heavily sweetened and un-aged beyond a resting period during production, when necessary, for their flavors to mingle
Uses of liqueurs
Liqueurs, sweet in flavour and with ingredients promoting digestion, are popular after-dinner drinks. They may be served straight, poured over ice, or mixed in an endless variety of combinations that may include liquors, brandies, and cream. Liqueurs are also used as flavourings in various dessert dishes
Liqueurs were originally believed to have medicinal properties, and have a long history of being used as cures for diseases such as smallpox and the plague, creating a belief that they were some kind of elixir.
These “elixirs” were originally made by steeping herbs in alcohol, and later made from black currants or other berries.
In the mediaeval times, flavored liqueurs were sometimes applied to wounds, but were most commonly used to cure a fever.
In order to make them tastier, these concoctions were sweetened, which eventually led to the casual consumption of liqueur, rather than it being treated as medicinal.
This also allowed many to sweeten their alcohol in order to disguise its poor quality. Up until the 19th century, it was common for liqueurs to be home brewed, often made from garden herbs and fruits.
