This breakout board will solve all your current monitoring problems. You don't need to bother with a multimeter, just use the convenient INA169 chip on this splitter to measure DC current draw and get a convenient analog output to ground
Most current measurement devices, such as our current panel meters, are only suitable for low-side measurements. This means that unless you want to use a battery, you have to glue a measuring resistor between target and true ground. This can cause problems in circuits because electronic devices tend not to like the ground reference changing and moving as current draw changes. This chip is even smarter - it can handle high-side current measurements up to +60VDC
The precision amplifier measures the voltage across a 0.1 ohm, 1% sense resistor. This resistor is rated for 2W continuous current, so you can measure up to +5A continuous current. The output is the current drawn through the onboard 10K resistor, so the output voltage is 1V per amp. So for 2A current the output will be 2V. You can change the load resistor to be larger or smaller by cutting the trace next to the load resistor and soldering a through-hole resistor.
We've included a 5-pin header (so you can easily connect the sensor to a breadboard) as well as a 3.5mm terminal plug so you can easily connect and remove the load
The method of use is very simple. Power the sensor using 2.7-60V to VCC and connect V+ to the high side of the supply and V- to the grounded load. Then measure the voltage output with a multimeter and you're good to go
