How to Deal with Idiots by Maxime Rovere and David Bellos

How to Deal with Idiots is a philosophical, witty exploration of why we encounter people we perceive as “idiots” in everyday life and how we can better respond to them — and to ourselves. Drawing on ethics, human interaction, and reflections on ego, Rovere argues that situations with “idiots” are less about fixed types of people and more about the dynamics of our interactions. The book offers insights and strategies for understanding what’s happening in frustrating encounters, maintaining perspective, and avoiding falling into the same patterns of thought and behaviour that make us seem foolish to others. Rather than simply judging or fighting perceived idiocy, the author suggests cultivating patience, self‑awareness, and thoughtful responses so that you can navigate difficult social situations more skillfully — and reduce the chances of being “the idiot” in someone else’s story.
