The original design was a plastic type pulley with a press-in bushing riding on a lubricated metal shaft. Under the constant pressure of the spring and the belt running this type of configuration in a hot environment will only cause the loss of lubrication and a lot of heat will be generated between the metal shaft and the nning bushing that holds the nning pulley.
Soon the heat builds up to a high level so that the plastic pulley melts and the metal bushing starts to drag thereby generating more heat. Then the melted pulley is separated from the metal bushing causing the dryer to malfunction.
This upgraded ball idler is an excellent design. First rep the bushing with a ball bearing. Ball bearings can withstand greater loads and help reduce friction. The ne xt point is that the ball bearing assembly is a sealed assembly. This prevents debris from entering the ball bearing and maintains internal lubrication. Therefore the heat in the environment does not cause more lubrication to escape the ball bearing assembly.
Keeping the ball bearings lubricated ensures a long service life and the bearing design itself helps keep friction heating to a minimum.
