Cylinder Pressure Gauge Instructions

1. Start the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.

2. Loosen all spark plugs one to two turns and start the engine (but do not start it) for 5-10 seconds. This will dissipate dust around the spark plug seats, preventing it from falling into the cylinder.

3. Carefully remove all spark plugs. Visual inspection can reveal many problems, such as: oil stains on the spark plugs indicate damaged piston rings or worn valve guides; burnt spark plugs indicate a vacuum leak.

4. Fully open the carburetor throttle body and check if the result is as described.

5. While starting the engine, firmly press the rubber cone of the pressure gauge against the spark plug hole.

6. Start the engine until all four compression strokes are completed. Measure a slight pulse at each compression stroke, noting the readings for the first and fourth strokes. Ensure the battery is fully charged, the starter motor is in good working order, and the engine is started at normal speed. Starting the engine too slowly will result in incorrect results.

7. After reading the measurement, pull the bleed valve at the F-cone end to reduce pressure.

Finally,

The engine is in good condition under the following conditions:
1. First stroke 50-70 psi (PSI)

2. Last stroke within the rated technical specifications
3. Cylinder differential is less than the specified differential. Note: Cylinder differential should not exceed 10-15 PSI (for Ford vehicles, the minimum should be less than 3/4 (70%) of the maximum).

The engine has a problem under the following conditions:

1. First stroke... 1. Low pressure during the stroke and a cumulative pressure of only 10-20 PS/1 per stroke indicate a stuck valve or a burnt valve seat.

2. Low pressure in one or all cylinders. Inject a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder and check for damage to the piston rings or cylinder walls, or for oil clogging small leaks around the piston rings. If the pressure remains low, the problem lies with the valve or cylinder head gasket. If there is only a slight increase, the piston rings, valves, or cylinder head gasket are likely faulty, or all three may be faulty.

3. Higher than normal pressure is caused by excessive carbon buildup in the cylinder.
4. If the engine reading is low after cylinder repair and the installation of new piston rings, it may be due to a problem with the piston ring installation.
