Build a Business not a Job by David Finkel and Stephanie Harkness

The book explains that many entrepreneurs don’t truly own a business—they’ve just created a demanding job for themselves. The goal is to shift from being owner-dependent (self-employed) to building a system-driven, scalable business that can run without you.

Core idea:

Build a company that works without your constant involvement, giving you more time, freedom, and long-term value.

Key points:

• Escape the “self-employment trap”: Stop being the person everything depends on.
• Create systems: Document processes so work can be repeated consistently without you.
• Delegate effectively: Build a capable team and trust them with responsibilities.
• Focus on working ON the business, not IN it: Think strategy, growth, and leadership.
• Scale and gain freedom: A well-structured business can grow, be sold, or run passively.

In one sentence:

The book teaches how to turn your business into a valuable, independent system instead of a job that consumes all your time.

If you want, I can break it down into practical steps you can apply immediately.
