The Mecanum Wheel is a special wheel type that allows to move in any direction. Sometimes it is called the Ilon Wheel after the inventor Bengt Erland Ilon (an employee of the Swedish company Mecanum AB). This is not a new invention - the first US patent was filed in 1972.
Each wheel consists of diagonal rubberized rollers. To take advantage of this special kinematics, a 4WD is required in the vehicle. Identical pairs of wheels are installed diagonally. So that the axles of the rollers point to the center of the vehicle. Depending on the speed and direction of the wheels, our vehicle can move in any given direction.
