A standard double-pole double-throw (DPDT) 100A knife switch has three distinct sets of terminal pairs:
- The Center/Hinge Terminals (Output Load): The moving mechanical lever handles are anchored here. The cables feeding your main distribution board (your home or office consumer unit) connect directly to these center terminals.
- The Top Terminals (Source A / Grid): Typically used for your primary utility grid power (NEPA/disco supply).
- The Bottom Terminals (Source B / Generator): Typically wired to your alternative power supply line, such as a generator or an inverter bypass circuit. [1]
Moving the handle UP bridges the center terminals to the top terminals, routing grid power to the house. Leaving the handle in the MIDDLE acts as a complete "OFF" isolation position. Moving the handle DOWN bridges the center terminals to the bottom terminals, switching the house over to the alternative supply.
