The number of Filipinos with diabetes is growing at an alarming rate. The numbers, however, could be higher than reported because there are Filipinos who have not been diagnosed with the disease.

According to the International Diabetes Federation Atlas 8th Edition, an estimated 158.8 million adults aged 20 to 79 years were living with diabetes in the Western Pacific region in 2017. This represented a regional prevalence rate of 9.5 percent. Over half of these cases are underdiagnosed. Close to two-thirds, or 63.8 percent of the adults with diabetes in the region live in urban areas.

The International Diabetes Federation is an umbrella organization of over 230 national diabetes associations in 170 countries and territories. It represents the interests of the growing number of people with diabetes and those at risk. The federation has been leading the global diabetes community since 1950.
