It has two heating /cooking levels. The inner material seems like light metal, while the outer material is plastic. This helps to keep the food warm after cooking. It can transform from cooking pot to serving dish. Depending on what you cook, it can easily get burnt, so be careful. You'll likely need to constantly stir to avoid that. I love the size. It can easily cook for 4 average adults.
