Bupleurum root has been used in Asia for thousands of years in the traditional healing systems of China and Japan. It is a component in the herbal formula sho saiko to, which consists of nine herbs total, including licorice, ginseng and ginger.
As a dietary supplement, Bupleurum is a good source of fatty acids and trace minerals, such as calcium and potassium. The root also contains rutin, a plant flavonoid composed of quercetin and rutinose that is commonly found in multi-vitamin formulas.
Safety: Do not use Bupleurum if you have liver yang rising, eye diseases (i.e., conjunctivitis) or headaches (i.e., migraines). Bupleurum can cause vomiting if taken in large doses.
