How to use the Rattler.
The rattler is introduced as soon as the child can count to  ten without supervision and prompting
The child on his or her own selects nine of the particular tens to be slotted and the transition number for that tens. The child proceeds to slot the nine tens naming the number the stationary and slotted number will make. In the end, the child slots the transition number and names it. If the teacher is satisfied after various drills the child is allowed to attempt the next tens.  The transition numbers 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 are points of worry, fear, and uncertainty for the child at the beginning.  Those points will soon become points of conquest, triumph, and accomplishment in the end.
Digital resources abound, but a ’hands-on’ physical resource like this is a great asset in numeracy lessons.
