The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is the open-back member of Beyerdynamic’s “studio legend” trio, alongside the DT 770 Pro and DT 880 Pro. It’s been a reference headphone for mixing, mastering, and editing since the 80s.
1. Type & sound
Open-back, circumaural over-ear design
Sound signature: Wide, spacious soundstage with detailed highs and tight bass. Beyerdynamic calls it a “sonic magnifier” - it reveals small flaws, clipping, and noise in a mix
Frequency response: 5Hz-35kHz
Sound character: Neutral with enhanced treble and controlled bass. Great for spatial imaging and critical listening, but the treble can be bright for some people
2. Impedance versions
80Ω: Works well with most audio interfaces and laptops
250Ω: Standard for pro studios with headphone amps. More controlled and detailed
32Ω: Less common, for mobile use
Sound is identical across versions if the impedance matches, but the 250Ω is the classic “studio” version.
