A circuit tester pen (or voltage tester pen) is a compact, handheld tool used to safely detect the presence of AC voltage (typically 70V-1000V) in wires, outlets, and switches without requiring physical contact with live metal (non-contact) or by completing a circuit. These tools are essential for DIYers and electricians to instantly identify live, hot, or broken circuits via light and sound alerts
Usage and Safety Tips
- "Live-Dead-Live" Test: Before trusting the tester, check it on a known live wire, then the target wire, and finally the live wire again to ensure the tool is working correctly.
- Safety Limitation: While they are excellent for detecting presence of voltage, they do not show the amount of voltage. A multimeter is required for precise voltage measurement.
- Handling: When using a non-contact pen, simply place the tip near a wire or into an outlet socket; a red light/beep indicates a "hot" wire.
