What is the difference between sweet basil and holy basil essential oil?
- Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) smells fresh, green, and balsamic. Its uplifting scent is high in linalool and eugenol.
- Holy basil (O. sanctum) has a sweet, spicy scent with a clove-like note. It is a sacred herb, with an aroma that can be used to purify the air and open breathing, especially during meditation. Key constituents are eugenol and 1,8-cineole.
History: Basil varieties are grown in gardens around the world, and are a favorite culinary herb. Sweet basil is very characteristic of Italian cuisine.
