First published in 1991 as Nigeria's Essential Drug Guide (NED Guide), EMDEX has remained Nigeria's trusted source for drug and therapeutic information to date. EMDEX is the acronym for Essential Medicines InDEX. Based on both WHO Model Formulary and Nigeria's Essential Drug List, EMDEX is unique to Nigeria as it also details mainly the pharmaceuticals and allied products approved for use in Nigeria.
What is new in EMDEX 2017?
EMDEX is now published yearly to accommodate ongoing extensive reviews of the drug monographs and therapeutic notes as well as the addition of new ones. These changes have resulted in significant increases in the number of pages of the print edition. In order to contain the cost of printing, Therapeutic Notes will be published in the EMDEX App only starting from 2018. Some of the changes in the current issue are outlined below
Legal Classification (POM, OTC and CD) Updates based on UK’s MHRA and Nigeria’s EDL/PML. We have added notes in some drug monographs to provide rationale for the classification changes

Hyoscine butylbromide
Misoprost*l

Some products were also delisted based on a request from companies that market them. Some companies that have been inactive for several years were delisted especially those we could not confirm their contact information
What are the Benefits of EMDEX Subscription?
Promote rational drug prescribing, dispensing and patient use
Improve drug therapy outcomes and patient’s quality of life while reducing therapeutic failures.
Enhance patient safety
Check the social drug problem of faking and adulteration – EMDEX contains descriptions of NAFDAC-approved brands of pharmaceutical products.
